BC Offers Walk-In Vaccination Clinic In Arvin
David Kaplan - Bakersfield Californian - 3/15/2021

(ARVIN, Calif., (KBAK/KBFX) — Francisco Garcia is a farmworker in Arvin. He says his contractor is requiring all the laborers to get vaccinated.

"I think it's important for the people you know, to take the shot. It prevents infection and to stay healthy for continued work," Garcia, said.

Sunday, Bakersfield College hosted a walk-in vaccine clinic at the Arvin palace dance hall. Vaccinations by appointment only have been available in Arvin during the week, at the veteran's hall. The Mayor of Arvin says not every local is able to get vaccinated during the week or schedule an appointment.

"A lot of them are elderlies, they're farmworkers, they don't have access to internet or hard for them to get registered and so the volunteers that are here with us today are helping them actually in the registration process," Olivia Trujillo, Mayor of Arvin, said.

"It's no make lines, no make appointment," Garcia, said. "It's only come in, walk in and take the shot. It's simple the process."

There were over 19 trained volunteers that spoke both English and Spanish assisting residents. Around 200 doses were on hand. Dr. Nick Damania, Director of Student Life at BC says this is a great way for students to apply what they're learning in the classroom.

"For all our clinics we love to utilize our students, to give them the hands-experience, because that's what education is for right?" Dr. Damania, said. "You learn the materials in the classroom, and then you have your co-curricular activities that really engage you in the public."

BC will host a vaccination clinic Sunday, April 11th, to give Sunday's patients their second shot. There will be a vaccine clinic at Bakersfield College's Delano campus Monday afternoon. It runs from 3 to 6 PM and by appointment only. Bakersfield College plans to open another walk-in clinic in a small town in Kern County, once more vaccines become available.
